The Houston Group consists of teachers, business, leaders and others interested in K12 computer science education.  CSTA Houston meetings provide opportunities for K-12 teachers to network, learn from one another and advocate for computer science instruction. We provide opportunities to better understand the computing disciplines and to more successfully prepare ourselves to teach and learn.

Karen Justl wrote on the CSTA Chapters: Houston Area wall: Interested in testing out a new computer science curriculum unit with your students? Are you a grade 4, 5, or 6 teacher?? We need your help, and your students will thank you! We are field testing a new grades 4-6 computer science curriculum unit (developed for SAE International). The goal of this unit is to introduce young students to the concept of computational thinking. See a preview of our activities. The field test is set to begin February 26 and end March 30, 2018. (subject to change) The unit will be part of the A World in Motion family of curriculum materials. The unit should take about twelve (12) 45-minute class sessions to implement. In addition, there are optional tasks available that could extend your students' learning experience. Field-test teachers will be required to · teach the unit to their class. · complete the unit by March 30, 2018 (units will be sent out to teachers the week of February 26). · administer posttests to student, then collect and send them to EDC. · allow access to the classroom for observation of the unit (possibly virtual). · fill out a detailed questionnaire about each activity. · collect and send samples of (or photos and videos of) student work to EDC. · be available for an interview. · be available to researchers for further questions. We are offering a $450 incentive to the chosen field-test teachers to cover the time you spend outside of regular class time to fulfill the above requirements. Teachers will be required to fill out a W-9 to receive this compensation. Your comments will help us make this curriculum unit the best that it can be. Don't have time to field test but want to be involved? If you are unable to field test at this time, or if we've filled our spots for teachers, we have an opportunity for up to 12 teachers to review the unit (minimally, this means read through it and fill out a survey with your feedback). For your time, we can offer you a $25-$50 Amazon gift card (depending on the level of feedback we receive). Let us know your interest by filling in the Sign Up sheet. SIGN UP NOW!
