CSEdWeek is December 5-11, 2016!

Join CSTA in celebrating and advocating for computer science education during the 8th Annual CSEdWeek. Since it was established by Congress in 2009, CSEdWeek has brought together teachers, students, parents, administrators, and community members to promote awareness and heighten participation in our field. Please look at the resources below and consider doing something in your school, district, or state. This is the time to show the world all of the wonderful things you and your students are achieving together.

Take advantage of the great resources and information available to CS teachers at the new CSEdWeek microsite. While you are there, don't forget to post your CSEdWeek events!

Administrators Matter
Teachers often tell us that one of the most important factors in the success of their computer science program is a supportive administrator, someone higher up who understands the importance of computer science education and support the provision of better and more courses for all students. In this new brief video from, LAUSD Director of Curriculum Gerardo Loera talks about why computer science and computational thinking are important for all students in his district.

CSTA Supports "Hour of Code"
This year for Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 9-15), CSTA is supporting a campaign to encourage millions of students to participate in an hour of computer coding. The goal is to introduce millions to the field and encourage them to sign up for more in-depth computer science studies. There will be several different hour-long introductions hosted on the CSEdWeek website. Many of the tutorials will be compatible with tablets and smartphones, and there will be some "unplugged" lessons that require no computer at all. We are encouraging all our members to lead their schools and communities in an Hour of Code. Please visit the CSEdWeek website and officially sign up to participate. Here you will find additional resources to help you promote and organize an event.

Exciting CSTA Resources: Sourcing the C in STEM
As part of its CSEdWeek activities, CSTA participated in the Sourcing the C in STEM: Making the Critical Connection Between Computer Science Education and Jobs Salon hosted by Change the Equation. With dynamic speakers, the passion for computer science in education was apparent, even while noting some very real challenges. Speakers included:
  • Alison Derbenwick Miller, Vice President, Oracle Academy and Vice Chair of Computer Science Education Week 2012
  • Trevor Packer, Senior Vice President, Advanced Placement Program, The College Board
  • Linda Rosen, CEO, Change the Equation
  • Chris Stephenson, Executive Director, Computer Science Teachers Association
