Michigan State University invites you to participate in a study of AP CS students and instructors

Posted By Philip Sands, Thursday, August 3, 2017

My name is Jon Good, and I am a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University conducting a dissertation study regarding AP Computer Science students’ persistence in studying computer science.. We are looking for AP Computer Science A and/or AP Computer Science Principles instructors and students for the 2017-2018 academic year. If you are interested and qualify, you as an instructor will receive $100 to participate.

What will I be doing in the study?
You will be asked to complete two online surveys in the fall 2017 semester and assist in managing distribution of recruitment and consent materials to students. You will be asked to contact parents with consent forms for minors, prompt students on whether or not they wish to participate, have participating students complete two online surveys, and answer questions the researchers may have regarding the course. Some students may be identified for phone interviews during the Spring 2018 semester, which we may ask for your assistance in facilitating.

How long is each survey?
Surveys for both instructors and students are expected to last no more than 20 minutes.

When and where?
The study will take place from August 2017 through approximately February of 2018. You will be asked to complete the teacher and student surveys at the beginning of your course in late August or early September, with the second survey happening in early December. The interviews of students will take place in late January to mid-February 2018.
